A day at the park

February 28, 2006

Since it was a nice sunny day, but not too miserably hot yet, we went to the kids park downtown this afternoon. There's a little kid-size town there with "stores", "restaurants", a "post office" and more. There are traffic lights and railroad crossings that you have to stop for if you rent a tricycle and a helmet. Plus, fountains, big sand boxes, and lots of grass. Mia ducked in and out of the shops in town and then played in the grass for a while. She went down a few slipper-slides and played in a school bus and a jeep! She seemed to have a great time. But, it was the first time she'd played in the grass and I'm not sure she knew what to make of it. She seemed to think it felt weird!

And, as always, more photos at Flickr.

Because we don't feed her enough...

February 27, 2006

Apparently Mia feels that she's not being fed often enough so she needs to take matters into her own hands. She got into her diaper bag and found the snacks I carry around with me--crackers, rice cakes, cheerios, and toddler puffs. She tried to eat them right through the container, but that didn't taste too good. So, then she went hunting for more food and found half a banana that she didn't eat for lunch. Now, maybe she can explain to me why she won't eat her food when we try to give it to her.

Why you can't leave food laying around

February 24, 2006

Apparently Daddy was planning to take a banana with him to work this morning. Unfortunately for him, he left it sitting on the back of the couch. When I brought Mia out and sat down with her she started scrambling to get away from me and seemed quite excited about something. I wasn't sure about what until I followed her gaze over to the banana. She found it right away and thought she'd eat it for breakfast. Too bad she didn't peel it first!

My baby's gone!

February 23, 2006

Everyone always says, "They don't stay babies for long." And you're not kidding! She's only 8 months old and already we wonder where our baby went. I don't know what age you can officially start calling her a toddler, but that's how she looks and acts already. She runs (well crawls or cruises) around the house getting into whatever she wants. She throws temper tantrums. She feeds herself the same food we eat. She drinks out of her sippy cup by herself or out of a regular cup with help. Not to mention that she's huge compared to the tiny little baby we brought home from the hospital. The clothes we buy for her no longer come from the newborn department. I was putting away her old clothes that she's outgrown and after each and every article of clothing I held up we said, "No way! She was never that small!" When I got to her coming-home outfit we said, "No, that never fit! It wouldn't even fit over one leg now!" But here's proof-- this photo of her was taken when she was 2 days old and that outfit is TOO BIG!

There are perks to living in Florida

Or at least a perk. It's that you can go to the beach in February.

Yesterday was a particularly nice day so we packed up our stuff and headed out. Mia hadn't been to the beach yet so we were curious to see how she'd like it. First, we lathered her up with baby sunscreen. She wasn't too keen on that part. Then we sat her down in the sand. She started to crawl away like she always does when you sit her somewhere, but this time she sat back down with a confused look on her face. I guess crawling in sand probably feels sort of strange. After we got her beach toys out--bucket, shovels, sifter-- she had a blast. She sat there playing in the sand for two hours! I haven't seen her sit in one place for so long since...well, ever! Daddy had some fun playing in the sand too, and he dug her a great big hole to play in. I'd say we had a pretty good time.

Oh, this looks like a comfy spot.

February 22, 2006

Mia fights every nap until the bitter end. Bedtime is even worse. She hates, hates, hates going to sleep. Why then can she seem to fall asleep anywhere at the drop of a hat-- when SHE wants to?

She's crawling around on the couch next to me one minute, then she stops moving for about 4 seconds which prompts me to look over and wonder why the long break? She's fallen asleep, mid-crawl!

I think she's got it!

February 21, 2006

Mia got the Drop & Roar Dinosaur for christmas, but hadn't seemed all that interested in it yet. Today, she learned how to put the balls in the holes! She was playing with it, and for some reason I thought she was going to figure it out this time so I grabbed the camera. So here she is doing it for the very first time!

Walking around?

February 20, 2006

Alright, so she's not quite walking by herself yet. But she does a good job of trying! She barely has to hold on to keep her balance, and she can stand for a few seconds at a time by herself. Oh, the end is near!

Where's Waldo?

February 18, 2006

...I mean where's her tooth?

Can't see it? Alright, scroll down for the answer!

If you click on this picture it'll take you to Flickr. If you then click on "all sizes" above the picture, then click "original" then scroll over to her mouth and squint you can see her little tooth. Hint: bottom front, right side.

Will you be my Valentine?

February 14, 2006

On Sunday, Gavin came over to play for a little while. Mia was chasing Gavin all over the place while Gavin was running away from Mia as fast as he could! They got in a few fights over toys, and they tormented the cats a little. All in all they seemed to have a good time!

Here are some shots from the afternoon: http://www.flickr.com/photos/robert_kimberly/sets/72057594064097042/show/

There's that tooth!

February 13, 2006

I've been saying Mia was teething for months now. But we had yet to see those pearly whites break through. A few days ago, I thought I felt something there and could see it just under her swollen gums. Yesterday, I was letting her suck on my finger in the car because she was quite annoyed that we were driving somewhere again when she bit down and I felt something razor sharp cutting into my skin. So I looked in her mouth, which is pretty difficult because when you pull down her chin she sticks out her tongue every time. But, I finally caught a glimpse of it and you can just see the top of it. It's definitely broken through now. Now she's definitely going to have to learn to quit biting when she's eating or she's going to be weaned as fast as she can say "sippy cup".

My baby is a Sim

February 10, 2006

For those of you who are familiar with the game The Sims, the title of this post speaks for itself. She sounds just like one of the characters in the game.

For the rest of you, let me try to explain. She has been making lots of vowel sounds for a long time. Lots of aaaaaaaaaaahhh, ooooooooooooh sorts of things. Then she started practicing consonants like mamamama, dadadada, babababa. Today though, she's started making lots of these different sounds really quickly put together with different inflections so that it actually sounds like she's talking even though you can't understand anything because they're not actually words. Like this, "Abugidamdui pada aaahuhuh. Mabadibagidama aaaaaah oh, oh, mamabadada hmmm. Ooooooh baga faaa haaa." It confused me for a second because it sounded like she was actually speaking-- some crazy language I don't know, but speaking nonetheless. I wonder if SHE even knows what she's saying!

I can feed myself... sort of

February 09, 2006

Mia has been practicing feeding herself "clean" foods like crackers, cheerios, and sweet potato fries for a few weeks. She's quite good at eating saltine crackers. Today, I thought she should give spoon feeding herself a shot. I bought her some Lil' Dippers to use. The food should stick to the end better than to a spoon thus eliminating the "food falls off the upside spoon" problems. I thought to myself that this might be a somewhat messy experiment so I took off her shirt. I then asked Robert, "Do you think I should take off her pants too?" It's a good thing I did... I'll let the pictures speak for themselves: http://www.flickr.com/photos/robert_kimberly/sets/72057594061985720/show/

Big shoes, little feet

February 06, 2006

Mia got new shoes a few weeks ago but she hasn't worn them yet. I was looking for some neutral Robeez or whatever knockoffs I could find. Target had these cute litte Trainers that were mostly white. I didn't want to get her 0-6 month size since she's 8 months old now, but I thought these looked a little on the big side. Trying them on her today though just shows me how small her feet really are! I hope she grows into them one of these days.

Footie pajamas aren't for crawling

I always buy Mia footed pajamas because I think they're about the cutest little clothes you can buy. Sometimes I put her in them early in the evening and leave them on as long as possible the next morning. Now that she's crawling and pulling up though, she's not liking them so much.

Beach Bum

February 05, 2006

We were walking around Babies R Us and the photographer came up to us to say that they weren't busy and offered us a free sitting and free 8x10.

I was picking a swimsuit for her since I want to get her enrolled in swimming lessons soon so I decided to get her pictures made in her new suit. They had some beach props and this is the result!

The best book ever!

February 03, 2006

The No-Cry Sleep Solution is the best book every written.

Mia has gone to sleep in her crib, not my lap, for 5 naps and three times for the night now. Her naps are back to being over an hour, sometimes 2 or more instead of the 20 minute catnaps she'd been taking and it doesn't take 2 hours of fighting her to sleep every night until we just give in and bring her to our bed. Laying her down for a nap in her crib and walking away 5 minutes later was completely unheard of before!

It's only been a couple days and she's not sleeping through the night, but we're still working on this, and so far there's a ton of improvement.

I think I may add this book to my Can't-Live-Without-Must-Buy -For-The-Next-Baby-Shower-I'm-Invited-To list. It'll go right between the bumbo and the sling.

What big (cat) brothers shouldn't teach little sisters

February 02, 2006

The cats always throw their food out of their bowl. This is why we got a tray to go underneath. Apparently, one of them shared their secret with Mia.

This morning I was trying to get ready to go and had a lot of stuff to load up in the car. I would get a handful, check on Mia, race to the car, and come back to find her in the same place I left her. On my last trip, I came back to find her throwing cat food all over the floor.

New things to play with

February 01, 2006

Daddy left his CD box out, and boy was Mia happy to find a new toy! She opened the box, took out a CD, inspected it, and promptly tried to eat it.

When I took it away from her and put it away in the cabinet she went over to try to get it back out. She pulled and pulled at the handle, but couldn't quite get it open. Probably because she was leaning against the same door she was trying to open.

Maybe she's a jazz fan?
