New mirror game

March 27, 2006

Mia has always loved the mirror. If we pass by one, she'll stop and flash a big smile to the pretty baby she sees. Now, she even waves to her.

Today, she made up a new game. She stands at the mirror, bends over sideways and tilts her head even more then laughs so hard at the silly sideways view she gets. Today it is funny over and over and over again. Tomorrow, we'll have to find a new game.

How do you convince a 9 month old to eat broccoli?

March 26, 2006

This is a start:

Unfortunately, it didn't work. She tried one. She spit it out. She picked up the second one and hurled it at the ground. She wouldn't touch a third. I gave her a plain one which she grabbed and plopped into her mouth at the speed of light. I gave her another broccoli stuffed one; she picked it up and tried to figure out how to get the broccoli out. After a while she gave up and tried tasting it again. No dice. She made a face and spit it right out... Not a fan of broccoli I guess.

Waving video

March 25, 2006

Mia is saying "bye-bye" or "hi" when she waves now. Not always, but frequently. Unfortunately, she seems to be camera shy! We couldn't catch her "bye-bye", but here's a "hi" wave.

Mia's friend, Lydia

Lydia is only 3 days older than Mia, but apparently is ready to hit the nightlife scene! I just had to link to this video of her dancing. It cracks me up everytime I watch it!

First step?

March 22, 2006

Mia's new trick today is standing by herself. This morning I took her out of the exersaucer and just plopped her down as if she could stand by herself. I don't know why I did this; I never have before (because she CAN'T stand...) but I did today and she just stood there looking at me. I just stood there looking at her thinking, "Wow she just standing there, and it's been a while now." Eventually she thought, "Hey, I'm standing, but I can't do this yet." So she sat down.

So today our little game is how long can we stand without holding on to something. And, now she's started trying to step. I got this still picture of her, but she was highly uncooperative for the video...

***UPDATE***
So, it was a big day for her. After I posted this, she started stepping more while she was standing. She took 2 STEADY steps today! Not the same as what she's been doing where she just sort of keeps walking after she's at the end of the couch and takes a couple steps on her way down. No, I stood her up, she stood there, not wobbling, just stood there for a few seconds. Then she smiled and waved at someone and took two steps toward them without wobbling. Then she stopped and still stayed standing for a second before she sat down. It was only two steps, but they were (seemed) purposeful!

She's a chipmunk... or a squirrel?

March 21, 2006

Everyone always comments on Mia's big cheeks. "Oooooh just LOOK at those cheeks!" And now I know why she needs them. To store her food for the winter. Well maybe not the winter, but for later at least. She doesn't swallow her food when she's eating. She looks like she's eating, food goes in, chew, chew, chew, but an important last step is missing. She doesn't swallow! Eventually she quits opening up for more food because she can't fit any more in there. This is when mealtime is over for now. Right now she's still got a half-mouth full of chicken. Her last meal was 45 minutes ago...

The dentist isn't so bad.

March 20, 2006

Mia's first dentist appointment went pretty well. She seemed to like him and was generally in a pretty good mood. He said since she was a late tooth bloomer--she got her baby teeth a little late-- she'll probably lose them a little late too. Guess the tooth fairy can relax for a while!

Wave Bye-Bye

March 19, 2006

We started trying to teach Mia to wave bye to people when they leave last week. I didn't know she'd pick it up so quickly, but today she started waving by herself. I think she's decided she'd rather wave hi though, instead of bye. This morning she was really having fun waving. She'd play with her toys for a few minutes, then look up wave and start talking. If you waved back at her she'd laugh and then go back to playing. A minute later we'd repeat the whole scenario. She doesn't get bored quickly!

Four, count 'em, FOUR teeth!

Mia may have started out slow in the getting your teeth race, but she wastes no time catching up. Two more came in over the weekend so now maybe she'll look less lopsided soon!

Chinese food on St. Patrick's Day

Most people go for the corned beef and cabbage, but not us!

We drove to Savannah on Friday for the St. Patrick's Day festivities. The festival was just crazy. By the time we got there there were very few sober people left. It was fun to do some people watching for a little while, but all the restaurants inside the festival area were charging outrageous covers so we decided to walk up a couple blocks to see what we could find. What we found was Chinese food. Here's Mia enjoying her fortune cookie.

Guess what's going on the Tivo?

March 16, 2006

I think I just figured out why Mr. Rogers comes on at 12:30. You can cook lunch while the little ones are MESMERIZED by make-believe land. She has been glued to the TV for 17 minutes now. Those producers at Mr. Rogers really do know what the kiddies like!

Girly girl

March 14, 2006

We got stopped by the photographer at Babies R Us again today for a free sitting and one 8x10. I guess they know they are going to have the cutest pictures in the end that you just can't pass up. So of course I had to buy a few...

Hat trying on day at the mall

March 10, 2006

We had to drop the car off at the shop for a few hours today and since it was all the way across town, we figured we might as well kill time at the mall over there. Mia tried on quite a few hats and we know how she just LOVES to wear hats! I think she was starting to get just a tad bit annoyed with us.

Here Barclay, I made you some soup.

March 9, 2006

I wonder how Barclay liked this concoction Mia made for him. It's a pretty simple recipe really. Take one bowl of water, add a few handfuls of cat food. Stir as needed. Voila!

And of course the chef must taste her work. From the look on her face, I'm not sure it turned out all that great!

Summer clothes

March 8, 2006

The weather is starting to warm up so I went on a little shopping spree for Mia's summer clothes. I decided to get mostly 12 month size so they'll last all summer. Some of them are a little big now, but it's only March. She's got a few months until it's super hot. Here's one of her new sundresses. She just loved the hat!

Tooth. Teeth?

March 7, 2006

Mia doesn't make it easy to get pictures of her new tooth. It took forever to get a close up picture of her with her mouth open that wasn't completely out of focus. I finally got this one so you can almost see her top left tooth just barely poking through. Upon further inspection, it looks like the top right one might be breking through at the corner. Maybe we'll see a 3rd tooth tomorrow!

You'll need the big version of the picture if you have any hope of seeing it!

Considering this as an Easter dress

I saw this dress and just had to buy it. I love little tiny "adult" clothes. I haven't taken the tags off yet though because I'm not sure if I should keep this color or get the pink one. Either way, she probably won't wear her pants and play shoes with it.

Another tooth!

March 6, 2006

Well Mia's 2nd tooth has officially broken through! I bet you thought it was the other bottom front one, right? Nope. It's a top one. And not only that, it's on the opposite side as the bottom one she has. Boy is she going to look funny with one bottom right tooth and one top left tooth!

She's been super clingy for the past few days and not sleeping well again. All of the usual things she does for a couple days when a teething wave comes through. Not wanting to eat off of the spoon, wanting to nurse constantly, short naps, crying fits in the middle of the night and waking a gazillion times. Oh yeah plus drooling like a waterfall and biting everything that goes in her mouth... hard.

I figured it was probably that second bottom tooth coming in. Last night she was particularly miserable and I did think to myself that this one seemed worse than the first one. I thought maybe she was getting sick or that something else was wrong, but then she fell asleep and I put it out of my mind. Imagine my surprise this afternoon when I saw her top tooth! So *that's* what the problem has been!

Why you should schedule the baby sitter an hour before you need to leave

March 3, 2006

When I used to babysit as a teenager, they'd ask me to be there at 7, but they'd never leave until 8. I couldn't figure out why they wanted to pay me for that extra hour. Now I know.

Getting ready to go out with Mia underfoot has become quite a challenge. Everywhere I walk she follows, sobbing the whole time. When she catches me she climbs up my leg and reaches up so I'll pick her up. Once she's being held she stops immediately. She's perfectly happy. If I don't pick her up she stands there crying her little eyes out.

Robert is trying to get ready also of course so he doesn't have time to carry her around either. No toys are interesting anymore. Nothing will do. Oh Mia, Mia, Mia... What are we going to do with you?
