Stepping up the childproofing

May 24, 2006

The big blue ball worked nicely as a way to keep Mia in the family room until recently. She knows she can move it now and will keep trying until she succeeds.

Once she's out she usually heads straight to the cat food. This is why we put it in the pantry and only open the doors every so often to let the cats get at it. The problem is that Barclay can open the pantry doors. So as a tag team, Mia can still get at the cat food. Barclay will open the door enough that he can get in, and then Mia will open it the rest of the way so that she can either eat the cat food or splash in their water bowl.

Peek-a-Boo

May 23, 2006

Mia has started initiating the Peek-a-Boo game and will be the peek-er instead of the peek-ee.It is the funniest thing! She came over and stood behind the laptop screen and then peeked around at me and started laughing hysterically. When I said peek-a-boo to her she quickly darted her head back behind the screen again. I could hear her giggling back there. And then slowly she peeked around the edge again just like I do to her when I am behind a corner. Finally, she came out all the way and started laughing so hard she couldn't control herself and had to sit down!

Here is a slightly more low-key version of her game version:

The end of walk-a-phobia?

May 18, 2006

As avid readers of miamitchell.com, you no doubt know that Mia took her first steps over a month ago and then promptly refused to walk again. Well today she was playing with Nora and decided to start standing all by herself again! She even tried to take a step, but didn't quite make it. Nora has also been standing when she doesn't realize it and also took a small step by herself! I guess these two just always have to do everything together!

I can climb stairs!

Who knew she could climb stairs! And at the speed of light! I guess it shouldn't have been a surprise with all of the climbing she does, but we don't have any stairs so it was a shock to watch!

Chicago Pizza

May 15, 2006

One can not come to Chicago and not have stuffed pizza. We stopped at Lou Malnati's tonight to get our fix and Mia learned a new trick!

Mother's Day Brunch

May 14, 2006

Mia and Nora apparently liked the Park Grill brunch too!

The littlest Cubs fan

We're in Chicago for the week and having a great time so far! For Mother's Day we had brunch in Millenium park with Dona, Mike and Nora. Then, this afternoon we went to a Cubs Game. Mia is quite a fan!

Little Laundry Helper

May 12, 2006

It is apparently a crime to let the clothes stay in the clothes basket. It is imperative that they all be pulled out immediately and dropped on the floor! Who knew?

We are pleased to announce

May 10, 2006

...that Mia has decided to start eating again! One chicken drumstick for dinner every night. Forget the sides, she's on baby Atkins.

Ice cream!

May 08, 2006

Mia got to try ice cream today! Only a tiny bit because we still have some dairy issues... but she did seem to like it! Afterwards I did get the puppy dog eyes... "Why can't I have more? You are going to eat that whole tasty cone by yourself and not give me one little bite?"

Tongue clicking

May 07, 2006

And she's learned yet another new trick! She can now click her tongue by sticking it to the roof of her mouth and smacking it down again.

Terrorizing the cats

May 06, 2006

So today, Mia was messing with the cats. Pulling their tail, grabbing at their face, petting them backwards.... They'd go to leave and she would crack up! She'd follow them and do the same thing. They'd leave and she would start laughing hysterically! This went on for quite some time until they figured out they could jump over the couch to leave the room and she couldn't...

I'd rather hear the alarm

May 05, 2006

So this week Robert has had a reasonable schedule and hasn't had to leave the house at the crack of dawn. This morning he took Mia and put her in her exersaucer while he showered so I could grab a couple more Zzzs. About 10 minutes later, he hollers in, "Could you help me?" I think, "Ok, what is the problem?" I get up and see this....

If by some chance you are still confused as to what she is standing in. Yes, it is what you think it is. We just picked her up and hosed her off in the bathtub, then started peeling layers of soiled clothes off. The exersaucer got hosed off next and after the seat went through the washer, everything is good as new! Ready to get up and do the same thing all over tomorrow...

The little fish

May 04, 2006

Mia is still loving swimming lessons. Warning: Proud mommy bragging ahead! I must say that she is the best one in the class! The other moms with older kids than Mia come over to say what a good kicker she is! And notice how much she just loves the water. She is always laughing the whole time we are in the pool! The instructor singled her out on Tuesday and said, "She will do great. She'll definitely be able to go underwater before the end of these lessons!"

Well today was the day we tried to go underwater. On One-Two-Three I had to dunk my whole head under and then come up smiling and excited. Then on One-Two-Three and it's Mia's turn to go under. Three of the instructors came over to watch to see how she'd do... She went under, came up and we cheered for her! No crying, but a little bit of sputtering and sneezing. Hopefully next time she will remember to hold her breath!

C is for cat

May 03, 2006

I wasn't sure if any of Mia's words meant anything. I mean she clearly says mamama when she wants something, but does she know it is my name or just that she generally gets to be held or fed?

Today she was eating and one of the cats jumped up into the window sill in front of her. She smiled at it and then said, "Cat". I said, "Yes, that is Barclay the cat." She looked at him again and said, "Cat". We did this a few times and I was surprised at her, but still not sure if it was just an accident. The cats left and she ate a few more bites. Then they came back and she looked at them, smiled at them and said "Cat" again!

When we were done eating, we came into the family room. She looked around, saying cat, cat, cat and I wasn't sure if maybe she was just making sounds afterall, but she seemed to be looking over the couch for them. So I called for them and they came. She lit up and reached toward one and said "Cat" again! Then I asked her, "Where is the cat?" She looked over toward one of them and sort of pointed-- as in lifted her arm up in the general direction -- and said "Cat".

So I can't talk myself out of it this time! I'm certain Mia says "Cat" and knows what it means now!

Talking up a storm

May 02, 2006

We know that she can say "Hi" or "Bye-bye" when she waves.

Then, a couple days ago, Mia repeated after Robert, "Hi Mommy."

Last night during dinner, she was not wanting to eat and was just throwing her food on the floor. I was getting slightly annoyed by this and finally said, "Mia, you know what?" in a tone that meant you'll find out if you don't stop throwing your food. She looked up and said "What?" I had to laugh at this point because although she was just mimicking, it was like total attitude. Exactly as I picture she will be at age 2.

This morning I was laying in bed and pulled her close in hopes that she'd go back to sleep for a minute or two. I felt a gigantic wet spot and thought great, her diaper leaked. Then I smelled it and groaned, "Oh Mia, did you poop already?" I swear, clear as a bell, she said "I did it." I asked shocked "You did it?" and she smiled at me. Robert hollered in from the bathroom, I heard that too! I know it is ridiculous to think she just talked to me, but how many coincidences do there need to be before I believe it?

Swimming

May 01, 2006

We had our first swim lesson today and Mia loved it. When we said kick, kick, kick she did it! I don't know if it is natural to want to kick in the water or if she really does understand more than I give her credit for, but she certainly can follow directions when she wants to. Then we had to dip them lower and lower into the water. She was ok dunking to her chin-- loved it and laughed about that. Then I dunked her mouth under and she still thought it was fun. When I dunked her nose under she sputtered a little but didn't get upset. So, I think she'll be able to figure it out and put her whole head under fairly quickly. She did such a great job. I'm so proud of her! We have to go every morning for the next two weeks. Maybe she'll be an Olympic swimmer by the time we're done!
