Tots in Tampa
July 31, 2006
We just got back from a long weekend at the beach with three other 1 year olds and their mommies (and daddies)! We had a blast! We've got pictures and videos.
The cast:
Dane: He is terrified of Mia and loves to play with balls! The best sleeper of the group by a landslide.
Nora: Mia's long lost twin sister. They do everything at the same time except that Nora likes to eat eat eat!
Piper: She's used to having lots of other kids around so she can block out some of the drama the other 3 cause. She was the only calm bath buddy!
Mia: A cute little bully who needs to learn to quit grabbing every toy someone else is playing with.
Becca: Our babysitter who made this trip so much more relaxing. Kudos to her for handling 4 screaming toddlers!

Laying still for the diaper change
July 24, 2006
Mia has recently started bursting into tears when you tell her things she doesn't want to hear. I figured if she can get upset that I'm explain things to her that she doesn't like then she knows what I'm saying. So when we were in the middle of one of our pin the diaper on the baby changes, I told her she couldn't run around without a diaper. I have to change it. You can not turn over until I'm done. You have to lay still until I get you cleaned up and a new diaper on. Then you can play again. The first time I tried this she burst into tears. It was not something she wanted to hear. But the next time I just reminded her to lay still and she did! The time after that she laid on the changing table right where I put her. As soon as I taped up the second side she started squirming and tried to turn over and get away. I think we'll call this progress!

Mia learned a bad word
July 23, 2006
From the other room, Robert yelled "Damn it!" and what did Miss Mia say right after? You got it.
We're hoping it was more of just a one time mimic rather than actually learning a new word. We're all about expanding her vocabulary, but this is one we could skip!

Party Girl
July 22, 2006
Last night we had a little impromtu get together with a few friends and Mia certainly wasn't a wallflower! A little mingling, a little dancing, some snacking... and don't forget to go step on the cat!

Right out of the fruit bowl

Mia was reaching for something on the counter, but we weren't sure what. Daddy inched a little closer to see what she was asking for and then he found out. As soon as she was within range she snatched up a nectarine right out of the fruit bowl and promptly took a great big bite out of it.
I wasn't aware that she could eat a whole nectarine by herself, but she finished all but that last couple bites. Just a tad on the messy side, but she loved eating like a big girl!

You mean I can walk there?
Mia has been flirting with walking for quite some time now. She thinks it is a fun game, but never realized it could be useful in getting somewhere. But today she focused on a target, decided she wanted to get there and WALKED over to it. Her goal? To go torture the cat. I had been wondering what her ultimate motivation would be.

Pleeeeease?
July 15, 2006
We're trying to teach Mia some better table manners than pointing at some food she wants and screaming at the top of her lungs. So the other night at dinner, we made a big scene about passing things back and forth and asking "Pleeeease?" then saying "Thank you". We did this over and over and Mia seemed to be enjoying the new pass the food around game although she didn't quite get into the saying please part.
This morning at breakfast, Mia saw her waffle hidden behind her yogurt. The first rule of feeding Mia is always give her food in reverse order of her favorites. She loves waffles but I wanted her to eat some yogurt first. However, she caught a glimpse of the waffle and she made it pretty clear that was what she wanted. I gave it to her and she said, "Pleeeease?"
Well it's a start!

One... Two...
July 12, 2006
When we were playing just now, I said one... two.... and then Mia said THREE!!! In the same intonation that I always use when we're counting to get ready for something. Who knew she'd be counting already!

Is she walking yet?
This is a common question we get these days. My new answer is this:
"She is a recreational walker who is currently on strike."
Meaning, she thinks walking is a fun activity to partake in when SHE feels like it. It is not a mode of transportation. That is what lightning fast crawling is for. And, walking is not a game that she wants to play when she is not in the mood to play. If you ask her to try at the wrong time, she just may decide to quit walking for the next 3 days!
Although, our newest breakthrough is that if she is standing up and I sit in front of her and try to coax her to come to me, she now walks to me nearly every time instead of dropping to her knees and crawling over. In Mia's world, this is progress!

Little pants-taker-offer

It is getting impossible to keep pants on this kid! At least she usually brings them to me after she takes them off.
"Here you go! I don't need these anymore! Thanks!" -Mia

Candy Thief
July 11, 2006
I had a piece of hard candy in my mouth and Mia noticed. She wanted it! She started digging in my mouth trying to steal it. A couple times she tasted her fingers after digging in my mouth and that just made her want to get at it more! In this video she was just focused on getting the candy at any cost. She even thought that maybe going after it with her mouth might work better!

Too many questions
July 10, 2006
If you ask "How big is Mia?" she'll throw both hands up in the air. If you cheer and tell her what a good job she did then she'll join you in the cheering and clap for herself. Clapping is a favorite past time whenever she hears a "Yay!".
Ask her, "Where is Mia's nose?" and she'll usually point to her nose. She can find her ear also. But I think we moved forward a little too quickly to mouth and now she's all confused! Sometimes you ask her to point to her nose and she sticks her hand in her mouth! Sometimes you ask for mouth and she grabs one ear. If you say, "No, that's your ear! Where's your mouth?" she'll answer by grabbing BOTH ears! That must be the right answer! Nope, that's not it either? Then I'll throw both arms in the air! They always cheer when I do that!

It's fun to be one!

We had some scanner issues so I'm just now getting her one year pictures scanned and posted. They are on Flickr now.

She IS trainable!
July 8, 2006
Mia has gotten quite good at bringing me small things she shouldn't have. Just now, she found a tiny piece of Glad Press n' Seal somewhere and she brought it right over and handed it to me. I told her what a good girl she was for doing that and she nodded yes as if she knew that before she went on her way.
Earlier today I noticed one of her barrettes was missing. I asked her, "Mia, where is your barrette?" She promptly reached up and pulled out the one she still had in and handed it to me!

Fountain videos
July 7, 2006
This is some video from her day at the zoo playing in the water park there. She had a great time but I think she likes the Kids Kampus better. The fountains are higher and there are more of them. This is baby games to her now!
In this one, she doesn't like it when the other boy comes and covers up the spray. She just yanks his hand right off!

Mmmmm, good!
July 6, 2006
We have been trying to encourage Mia to eat more and try new things this month to get her weight back up. (By, the way, she has gained a pound and a half from her 1 year appointment putting her at 19 lbs. So, we're off the pediatrician's On Notice List.) We always take a piece of something we want her to eat and make a big show of saying "Mmmmmm.... That is SOOO good! Yummm!" I think we have gotten our point across, because today after every bite she stops and says "Mmmmmmmm" before she moves on to the next bite.

Happy 4th of July
July 5, 2006

We had quite a busy 4th of July weekend. We went to the zoo and she got to drive around in her car instead of the stroller. That was much more fun! Even without a seatbelt she stayed in the whole time and if we took her out for some reason then she had no problem getting back in it. Usually she is climbing out of the stroller even when she is buckled in, and getting her back into it without a fit is quite a feat. She loved the play park there that had lots of fountains for her to splash in.
That evening, we went to Metropolitan park for a fireworks show and a showing of Madagascar on a big screen in the park. We tried to get there early and have a picnic while we camped out in a good spot, but turns out everyone else had the same idea and we were way in the back! It was still a great time.
On the 4th we went to the Landing and had lunch, went on a riverboat cruise, and then to the Kids Kampus where there were even MORE fountains for Mia to splash in. She played in the water for 2 hours and all the other parents said how brave she was for racing right into the middle of all the action every time!
That evening we scoped out a restaurant with patio seating for a good view of the fireworks show. Our persistence paid off because we had a great seat to see the whole thing. Mia was just mesmerized both nights. She would Ooooh and Aaaaah and try to reach for them and talk and if everyone else cheered or clapped then Mia would too! It was a couple of late nights for her, but she was on her best behavior and had a great time!

Finally a walking video!
July 2, 2006
Mia the Tease has been taunting us for some time now, taking more and more steps by herself, letting go of things on her own, standing up more frequently. I've been carrying around the camera 24/7 trying my best to get some of this on video. Finally, we caught her on film!

Monkey See, Monkey Do
July 1, 2006

My little mimic has started copying *useful* things! Yesterday when we were getting ready to go to dinner she picked up her brush and started brushing her hair. It was so cute because she really did run it through her hair the right way and everything!
Then, after she ate and I had her cleaned up (mostly) she was sitting on Roberts lap and she grabbed his extra napkin and started wiping her face with it. She started wiping his face too!
We had gone to Clarke's Fish Camp which has a ton of stuffed animals around as decoration. She was a little scared of the bear I think!
