This little piggy went to market...

August 31, 2006

I only *tried* playing this game with Mia once and I couldn't even remember all of the words so I gave up. But it certainly left an impression on the girl with the shoe and foot obsession. Now, she comes over to my foot and starts wiggling my toes one by one while chattering about something. The actual words were unintelligible, but she sure does sound like she knows what she is saying!

Maybe she was adopted?

August 29, 2006

Because no daughter of mine could actually dislike chocolate ice cream. But that is exactly what seems to be the case.

Usually when we have ice cream Mia comes running with a mouth opened wider than I knew it could open and yelling "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!" Today was no different. Robert brought me a bowl of ice cream and Mia. She practically jumped out of his arms to get follow the bowl. I gave her a bite and then.... nothing. She just stood there. No wide open mouth eagerly awaiting a second bite. No loud Mmmmmmmmmmmm prompting you to shovel it in faster. No climbing into the bowl to get more faster. In fact I got 2 leisurely bites myself in without any interruption. I offered her another bite and she opened her mouth a tiny crack. This is how she opens her mouth for regular food! I said, "I don't think she likes it?" About this time, Robert comes and sits down with his bowl. As Mia beelines it over to him with a wide open mouth and the loud Mmmmmmm-ing, Robert gives her a small bite. Suddenly, ice cream girl is back! She is like a monkey with no regard for personal space and unfortunately for him, there will be no ice cream eating in peace. I think I might get chocolate ice cream more often!

Kisses for Dolly

Video of Mia giving her doll kisses. I couldn't get her to give hugs this time, but usually she carries the thing around from room to room hugging and kissing it for a half hour at a time. This time she threw a somersault in and if you listen closely you'll hear her say "Cheese" but she really means shoes!

Little drummer girl

Drumming with Daddy is so fun! And she gets a little bit of her "football feet" in there too. When she is happy or excited she sort of runs in place. But then again, maybe this is her dancing today!

Find Daddy

Mia still likes to look out the windows to find Daddy while he is mowing.

Proof that she understands

August 26, 2006

It got too quiet so I went to find Mia. She was in the bathroom picking little pieces of toilet paper off the roll. I didn't have to say a word though. As soon as I got there, she looked up and said "DON'T" then turned and left.

Who needs a straw?

August 25, 2006

Mia loves taking her straw in and out of the box and sometimes throws it on the ground. I usually pick it up and tell her that she needs to leave her straw IN the box. Just now, she was drinking out of it like a cup, pouring the juice out of the little hole into her mouth. I thought she was just improvising since her straw was on the ground. I came over and retrieved the straw and put it back in for her. She looked me square in the eye, pulled out the straw and threw it across the room. Then she put the box back up to her mouth and started drinking out of the little hole again all while eyeing me mischievously. Did I ever mention that I think she is a woman who knows her own mind?

Shoe fetish

August 23, 2006

Mia wants to put her own shoes on, my shoes on, and daddy's shoes on. She also knows whose shoes are whose now and will bring the appropriate ones when asked. Apparently her newest thing is to put on my shoes and walk around the house in them.

Our Weekend

August 22, 2006

This weekend we went on a mini-road trip to visit some family and friends in the Southeast. Here's the quick run-down of our trip.

On Friday afternoon, we headed to Atlanta to visit Mia's friend Ella. The girls share the very same birthday! We had a nice dinner there and took another bath picture for my collection. We spent the evening there and headed to Greenville the next morning.

Fun in the sun!
At Tatie and Tonton's house, we went swimming in the afternoon.

Sitting with Poppop
Then had a fancy dinner for Meema's birthday.

I need a break!
On Sunday, Mia did not sleep enough AT ALL which led to quite a cranky baby the next day. We went to Gymboree on Monday and Mia was so tired she was about to fall asleep on her feet. She could barely keep her eyes open!

I love dogs now!
On Monday night we stopped in Columbia to visit some more friends. There, we learned that Mia has definitely overcome her dogaphobia and just LOVED playing with this puppy!

What do you want to be when you grow up?

August 15, 2006

Who knows the answer, but she thought she'd see what it was like to take after Daddy today. The zoo has a little room where they have tiny scrubs and little white coats for the kids to wear while they give the stuffed lion a shot or bandage the elephant's trunk. They can look at X-rays of snakes and other animals or work on the operating table. She had a great time playing dress up!

Beach Day

August 13, 2006

We went to a new beach today with Franchi and Justin. Mia loves Justin because he is a BOY! But in the car on the way there, Franchi asked her to say hi to him and Mia actually rolled her eyes! She was still in a mood from just waking up...

Once we were there, Mia had a great time of course. She learned how to dig the shovel into the sand and flick sand up everywhere. This was just hilarious! She'd flick some sand up and then just laugh and laugh at what she'd done!

When it was time to go into the water, we waded out just a few feet and there were plenty of tide pools for her to splash in. After a few minutes, she decided she wanted to go farther into the ocean though. She didn't want to be carried-- she kept jumping out of my arms, literally. I had to catch her in mid-air. When we let her down she just wanted to yank her hand away and run straight into the ocean. What a daredevil!

All tuckered out

August 11, 2006

So the verdict is that we chose to join Gymboree instead. I'll tell you that it certainly does seem to tire her out!

She fell asleep on the way home and slept through lunch. She woke up just as we were leaving, so I grabbed her a breadstick on the way out and planned to go home to cook her a real lunch. She never made it that far though.... on the way home she fell back asleep in mid-bite! Before this picture was taken, right after she fell asleep, her arm was still in the air, clutching her breadstick for dear life.

Bath time: the good and the bad

August 09, 2006

Mia loves the part of the bath when she gets to splash around and play with her myriad of bath toys. She does NOT love the part where she has to lay on her back to get her hair rinsed. And she most certainly doesn't like the part when she is told once again that there is no standing in the bathtub. Here are some funny faces she was making tonight... followed up with the makings of a tantrum from being told to sit down.

Little Gym

Today was our trial Little Gym class and Mia had a blast! It is sort of like a gymnastics class for toddlers with a lot of other activities thrown in like singing, dancing, chasing balls, finding your nose, clapping, and playing the bells. She hung from the bars all by herself today and then she walked across the balance beam with some help from me. We're hoping she'll get better at paying attention to the structured activities as well as get some socialization with her peers.

Tomorrow we try out Gymboree and then we have to decide soon since fall semesters are starting next week!

Talking on the phone

Did I mention that Mia loves to talk on the phone? She'll always hold it upside down on her shoulder and talk up a storm. A lot of words sounding like "Hi" are usually thrown in amongst the sims talk.

Somersaults

August 08, 2006

Mia loves doing somersaults. Usually she'll get in this position and wait for you to come push her over. But lately, she's been trying to do it herself more and more often. She usually ends up going sideways rather than forward, but she's still working on it!

I love Craisins!

We have found a new food higher on the preferred food hierarchy than cheerios. She just can't get enough Craisins! She gets them out of the pantry annd brings them to me. If I don't open then right away a temper tantrum ensues!

Using a spoon

August 07, 2006

Since Mia has discovered the wonderful world of utensils, she doesn't like to eat anything unless she can do it herself. Making oatmeal to the perfect sticky consistency is sometimes a challenge!

In this video, she also demonstrates her "blowing on hot food" abilities:

Carrying things with her mouth

...is apparently the latest craze. Mia tries to hold anything she can between her teeth and carries it all around the house that way.

I stand corrected

August 06, 2006

We were all sitting at the table when Mia was talking and she said "Ba ba boom". I misheard her and repeated back at her "Va va voom". She stared at me like I had tried to kill her cat and in a very firm tone, she corrected me. "BA BA." Not a mistake I want to make again!

Robert looked up at me in shock at what he had just witnessed. "She TOLD you!"

The Pluot

As you know, Mia loves to eat whole peaches and nectarines. While I was shopping today I noticed a fruit called "Pluot" which I had never heard of. It looked a little like a nectarine so I figured how different could it be? Mia saw it and practically jumped out of my arms trying to get to the thing. So I put her in her chair and gave it to her for a snack. She went after it like it was the first meal she'd had in ages. I finished putting the groceries away and when I looked back over at her, it looked like something had crawled up onto the table and exploded right in front of her. WHAT A MESS!

By the way, in case you were wondering.... a pluot is a cross between a plum and nectarine. But not to be confusesd with the plucot or Apriums!

New pool

August 05, 2006

Mia had quite a day! We went to the MOSH (Museum of Science & History) where she found a kids play area that included a splashing area that she played in for over an hour. I forgot my camera so of course I'm in mourning over the pictures I missed. Oh well, next time.

Then, this afternoon we opened up her new pool that has been sitting here unopened. Well it was a hit! It has fountains everywhere, a whale slide, a dolphin ride on, ring stacker, and palm tree. She thought she was in heaven!

Where's Daddy

It seems that Mia is going through her Daddy separation anxiety this week. Where's Daddy? Pick me up Daddy? Carry me Daddy? Where are you going Daddy? This morning Robert went out to mow the lawn and Mia was not happy to be abandoned. She ran from window to window looking for him and yelling Dadadadadada. When she caught a glimpse of him she was oh so happy and put on a huge smile and started waving madly. Of course when the lawnmower was out of sight she was just devastated again. After a few passes with the mower, she started to realize she could hear him coming before she could see him so she started waving in anticipation. And when Daddy looked up at her and waved back it was just about the best thing in the whole world!

Talking up a storm

August 04, 2006

Mia has become quite the talker over the past couple days. She is learning so many words per day that I can't even keep up with them all. And not all of them are clear as a bell so it is a bit of work to remember which "word" means what. Shoes sounds like cheese. But, juice sounds like shoes. When she wants applesauce she asks for dappaso. She seems to know the meanings of these words. She asks for fish, cheerios and "Dip" which is anything in a small container. Spaghetti sauce seems to work pretty well to get most foods down. However now that she knows she can "dip" and dipping is fun she won't eat without it. She'll hold out, yelling "Dip dip dip" until you let her dip her food so that she can eat it. If she is not hungry she'll still call for the dip but just swish her food around in it.

Today, Mia just threw her plate on the ground and I told her "No, we do not throw our plate on the ground!" and she looked down at it and in her stern voice, usually reserved for the cats, she said "agablahglububla plate dont!"

Who needs a maid?

August 03, 2006

Yes, Mia can make quite a mess throwing her food on the floor when she's full or mad. But lucky for me, now she clean up her own mess!

Mia's latest tricks

August 02, 2006

A few new tricks to report:

Top of the list is FOLDING the laundry! She takes something out of the laundry basket, crumples it up in her hands and then puts it on the couch. She'll do this for about 3-4 articles of clothing before she realizes that now there is a pile of clothes on the couch that must be pulled down.

She loves the new shoes Grandma sent her and will say "shoes" which sounds more like "cheese". She'll bring them to me when I ask her to but prefers to carry them around more than to wear them.

She can feed herself oatmeal with a spoon and now wants nothing to do with silverware unless SHE is holding it.

She kisses herself in the mirror, and her baby doll. Depending on her mood we can convince her to give kisses to us.

And last but not least... she's learned quite a few new dance moves:

Breakfast this morning

August 01, 2006

Mia decided there was a better way to drink out of her juice box than in the boring typical fashion. The straw was just no good.

Then once she got down she realized she was still hungry for a cheerio snack!
