Look what I can do!

September 27, 2006

Mia is always taking my phone places and it takes me forever to find it. One time I had to call it 3 times because it went to voicemail before I could find it. It was in the bottom of her clothes hamper and monitors from her room sent me on a wild goose chase through two other rooms. Anyway, today I just sighed and said "Mia, do you know where the phone is?" She looked up at me and ran right over to it and then took it to the diaper bag and put it away in it's little holder. I was impressed! Then I asked, could you bring it to me? I need to call someone. And she did!

She eats string cheese the "right way" by pulling off little strings lengthwise instead of biting off the end. If she notices that I have held some back from her, she wants that piece. I tell her she needs to finish what she has first so she feeds the rest of it to me and then asks for more.

She hears the Elmo gift card giggle or sees an Elmo and says "Melmo!"

This morning, a new twist on the morning cat-yelling ritual. She clearly said "Nononononono! Don't do that!"

Dora the Explorer

September 21, 2006

I like Dora. I think she has a good little show. But I don't LOVE Dora. I haven't been shoving Dora parapharnalia down Mia's throat or anything. She has a few things because it seems that the girl version is always Dora and the boy version is Spongebob. However, today we bought a Dora sippy straw cup because when I held the two up and asked Mia if she wanted Dora or the purple one she answered "Do-ra". Clear as a bell. She wants Dora.

Elmo TMX

September 20, 2006

I have known this was coming for months. And I am well aware of the big shortage with the original Tickle Me Elmo. And, I am well versed in the ways of Ebay. This is precisely the sort of hot ticket item that will get you ridiculously high prices. However, did I make sure to get to the store yesterday to buy one? Or 10? No. I did not. I tried this morning and had no such luck. After 6 stores I went home and decided to continue the hunt over the phone. After calling every Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R Us, and Babies R Us within a 100 mile radius, the verdict is..... Elmo is sold out. Why did I tell myself one extra day wasn't going to make a difference? It's not that I didn't know any better. I think it must have just been denial. Luckily, this afternoon I have secured 1 for Mia for Christmas. So at least she is taken care of. But I'm going to have to quit watching the auctions already closing at 175% profit margins when it is only September.

The little ape strikes again

September 14, 2006

Mia copies everything. Her newest thing is to copy coughing or sneezing. And it is just oh so funny. If you so much as clear your throat then she will cough for at least 10 minutes. If you sneeze, she laughs hysterically and shouts "CHOO" while spitting all over everything.

We can blink at each other for hours at a time. And tongue sticking out is a perennial fave. However, the cutest one by far is saying "all gone" while shrugging her shoulders and raising her hands, palms up.

Some more new tricks

September 13, 2006

Spinning around in circles until she is so dizzy she can't stand up anymore.

Running on the couch but only if I'm sitting on one end so I will yell at her and chase her down because this is a fun game.

Yelling NONONONONONO and telling off any child who dares come near her toy.

Sniffing really loudly while wrinkling her nose, squinting her eyes, and pursing her lips.

Fake laughing then telling off the person on the other end of the phone.

Sleeping sitting up.

Grabbing anyones toes and wiggling them while yelling "Geese?" meaning "PigGIES?"

Getting her swim suit out of her drawer and bringing it to us when she sees us getting dressed for swimming.

Not a fan of the sharing

September 8, 2006

Mia has recently decided that she doesn't like to share. No, make that HATES it. Yesterday we were at a playgroup activity and I was giving Mia craisins from my hand. Another girl came over to get some and Mia just about had a fit! She yelled and shoved the other girl away. When I told her that we had enough for everyone and that she could share, Mia tried to pick up the whole handful of craisins and shove them into her mouth. This is the same girl who eats cheerios in 3 bites. I put half of the craisins in one hand and half in the other so the two girls could have their own portions. Not good enough says Mia. First she tried to fling my other hand away so I would drop the other girl's portion. Then she actually put her mouth in my hand, took all of her craisins into her mouth for a second then spit them back into my hand. THEN she reached over and tried to start eating the other girl's!

Today at Gymboree was even worse. When another boy wanted to play with her ball she shoved him. If anyone else came near the toy she was playing with at the time she would yell at them until they were scared away. We are definitely going to have to work on this new behavior.

Mia gives up

September 6, 2006

Mia still comes to bed with us after midnight, but when she wakes again I don't usually let her eat. She is persistent though. I usually roll over onto my stomach because that's the only way she can't get to the food! Frequently, when she finally gives up, she flops herself over on me and we sleep like this for the rest of the night. I much prefer it to the "flop over and sleep on my head" position.

Caviar, anyone?

September 1, 2006

We went out for Japanese food for Robert's birthday tonight and it turns out that this is the perfect place to take Mia! I knew that she loved edamame already, but I had never let her eat just that until she got full. Turns out she can eat about half a pound of it! We had to order a second bowl because she ate the first one by herself and we didn't get any! Then she was asking for some of my miso soup, so I gave her a taste. Well, that was the last bite of soup *I* got tonight! We ordered her an avocado roll and she ate half of it, but really was more interested in my Ikura . She ate all of the salmon roe off the top and all I got was the rice and seaweed wrapper! Who would have thought that the girl would add caviar to the list of foods she deems acceptable?

Tomorrow I'm on a hunt for a Japanese grocery store!
