Chew!
January 28, 2007
Although Mia used to be one to take three bites to eat a Cheerio, lately she's become an occasional food stuffer. There have been times that she has put entirely too much food into her mouth and then realize it was too much to swallow so she would spit it out. The last time she did this I saw a bunch of food in her mouth so I told her to "Chew" and she proceeded to spit out her whole mouthful of whatever she was eating into my hand. I made an annoyed sound that was like a cross between "Ugh" and "Gah" and told her again to chew her food. Sure enough, that sound stuck and now everytime she hears the word chew she has to copy me!

Lots of videos
January 27, 2007
You may have noticed a lack of videos posted recently. The reason for this is three-fold. One, I have just been a slacker in posting the videos I do have. Two, Mia has become even more adamant about not performing on cue. Three, if you do happen to catch something on video, the second that Mia does see the camera she'll immediately charge you. This is often accompanied by a loud screaming "Nooooooooo!"
But, we did manage to get this little tidbit on film the other day. For the reasons stated above, most of it is shot from behind... but I tried to inch around and catch her face and, well, I got caught.
Since Christmas, Mia has been trying her best to nail down this jumping thing. She'll squat down really low, saving up her energy, then throw her arms in the air while yelling "JUMP" in hopes that some of this momentum will get her off the ground. She's caught some air a few times, but she's still working pretty hard on this new skill!
She's also taken to eating mashed potato flakes. I am seriously questioning her taste at this point.
She either said "That's a nice car!" or just some toddler gibberish...
I'm trying to catch up on the backlogged videos, so check Vimeo for new additions!

Just a little attitude
January 25, 2007
She pouts. She doesn't get her way so she crosses her arms, hangs her head, leans back against the wall and pouts. 19 months old. Awesome.

Ms. Monk eats peanut butter and jelly
January 21, 2007
Mia had her first PB&J today for lunch and seemed to like it. At first I was excited to have a new easy lunch solution for her. I quickly realized this wasn't going to be simple at all! Once she was a few bites into her sandwich, it got a little messy. Actually not really that messy at all... but if the slightest bit of peanut butter or jelly got on her hands we had to stop and clean that off before we could move on. I tried to get her to lick her finger. No way. I tried to convince her she could continue eating and we'd just clean everything up at the end. Nope. So I sat there with a rag next to her and we slowly but surely finished the sandwich together. One bite-- one wipe. And so on and so on.

Little Helper
January 20, 2007
Mia spilled a cup of water on the floor tonight and I ran and got a towel and started sopping it up. She immediately leaned down and started pressing her palms into the ground also. It was quite funny to watch and I had called Robert over to see how she was trying to help. I was saying to him, "She is doing exactly the same motions but it's as if she doesn't think the towel is an important part of this operation." At that very instant Mia got up and ran off. She came back a few seconds later with a towel and started using it to sop up the spill!

A little OCD
I've been applying a cream to a spot on my leg (mostly) every day for a few weeks now. After I put it on, I don't want my pants to rub it off until it dries so I usually walk around with one pants leg rolled up to my knee and the other down for a while. This is really bothering Mia and she insists on either trying to roll my other leg up to match or pull the 2nd one down. Sometimes she even starts messing with her own pants in what I assume is an attempt to roll one up. I think she may be a little OCD...

Decked out in Dora
January 11, 2007

Wearing a Dora shirt, Dora jacket, Dora shoes and lounging on her Dora bed while watching Dora.... is there anything we're missing?

Expanding her horizons
January 09, 2007

We played at Toddler Town again today and as usual, Mia spent a good chunk of her day playing house. Tending to the babies, cooking, vacuuming, and ironing. But, she did venture off into the other sections a bit more too. She played blocks, trains, puzzles... all sorts of things!

Is it Mardi Gras already?
January 08, 2007

Anytime you ask Mia where her belly button is she'll lift her shirt without hesitation. Today at playgroup she found a flashing friend.

Ready for the pool
January 07, 2007

We haven't been swimming in a few months and I was wondering if Mia would forget how or be scared of the water since she hadn't seen it for a while. So we went to the pool and Mia the Fish was back. Squeals of excitement when we got in. Why haven't we done this in so long?

Mia & the goats
January 05, 2007

We went to the zoo today and Mia got to brush the goats. She loves this part although she isn't sure if she's supposed to be scared. As long as they are perfectly still she'll muster up enough courage to go brush them and has a great time. The second they move though she runs away as if they're going to attack her! It's not like they even have to walk towards her, it might just be blinking it's eyes and she'll jump and run away.
Today, Mia made up a new game. She brushed the dirt and then applied said dirt to the goats. It took me a couple rounds to catch on that she was doing this on purpose. She'd brush the dirt, I'd tell her not to do that but to brush the goat instead. She would, but unbeknownst to me, this was exactly her master plan-- to brush the dirt ON to the goat. We did this a couple times until I saw a little corner of her mischievous smile and had a lightbulb moment. I made her put the brush away but she ran to a different bin and got a different kind of brush. This one didn't work as well though. She rubbed it in the dirt but none stuck so when she brushed the goat it didn't get dirty. Unacceptable. Brush was thrown away. She went back to get the old brush and started to dust the goats again so we had to leave. I'll spare you the details of the tantrum that ensued...

Latest Mia-isms
January 03, 2007
- She will play with zippers all day long. Ziiiiiiip... Unziiiiiip...
- She likes to do the hand motions to Itsy Bitsy Spider and will start up randomy when she wants you sing it.
- She says "Hep! Hep! Hep!" when she wants you to help her do something. This is often accompanied by guiding your hand or pushing you out of the chair and over to the place you need to be.
- Tickle tickle tickle tickle tickle!
- She made up her first pet name! Grandpa is now Pappy.
- What does a scary sheep say? Baaaaa accompanied by the ferocious lion hand gesture.
- She calls people the wrong name and then laughs hysterically.
- She will yell "Jump!" while squatting then standing up to her tippy toes and simultaneously throwing her arms up in the air and possibly lifting one foot off the ground.
- Her mup (cup) must be placed in her cup holder on the tray of her stroller at all times. If it isn't there, she won't give up until you give it to her, but doesn't even bother taking a sip-- just sets it in it's place then kicks back and relaxes again.

18 Month Stats
January 02, 2007
Mia is 22.2 pounds (25th percentile), 32 inches (50th percentile), and has a head of 47.5cm around (75th percentile). So although we thought she weighed more since she seemed pretty heavy when we were running with her through the airport, she has made some pretty big leaps since her tiny toddler status was solidified at her 1 year appointment. She's a little behind on getting her teeth, but meeting and exceeding all of her developmental milestones. She even gave her doctor a nice display of her No-saying skills... Dr. Ceron just shook her head and said to me, "Oh mom, I'm sorry!"
