Conversations with a 2 year old

January 25, 2008

Mia: Mommy, look what I found!

Me: What is it?

Mia: It's a booger!

Me: A burger? Where did you find it?

Mia: I found it in my nose!

Arigato Gozaimasu

January 21, 2008

It means thank you in Japanese. Pronounced "ah-ree-gah-toe go-z-eye-mas". Today we went to the botanical gardens and after the woman working at the ticket window finished helping us, Mia of her own volition called out "Gato Gozaimasu" clearly enough for the Japanese woman to understand her and acknowlege it. Does this officially make her bi-lingual?

Learning to keep my mouth shut

January 12, 2008

I knew this day was coming.

The other day our neighbor's dog started barking incessantly... again. These people don't seem to pay much attention to their dog and it annoys us. All. Day. Long.

Mia asks, "Do you hear that noise?"

I say, "Yeah, I do. That's the puppy again."

Mia says, "Puppy is sad."

I say, "Yep, puppy is sad because he has bad parents."

Cut to playgroup 2 days later. One of the moms brings a baby who is probably 9 months old and lets him crawl around on a blanket. She gets up for a minute to check on her older child and the baby gets upset and starts crying. Mia looks at me and yells, "That baby is sad because he has bad parents!"

Sign of the Times

Mia's videos all get posted on Vimeo so any other Vimeo users are welcome to watch and comment on them there. The other day, a fellow Vimeoan, Capucine posted a video of her cat that Mia just loved. She kept requesting it so I filmed her watching it and posted that video. Well, Capucine was pretty excited to "meet" Mia as well so her mom filmed her singing along and making Mia a paper airplane! Looks like she's got her first online friend!

Where does she come up with it?

January 08, 2008

Mia: Mommy I'm so hungry for some food! Can you cook some doodles? Huh?

Me: Ok. We can have some noodles. (I start cooking...)

Mia: Wow, look at this mess! (Her dress up clothes are strewn all across 3 rooms.) Want to help me clean up before we eat? Huh? Is it a deal?

Santa left one of his elves...

January 06, 2008

Since Christmas, Mia has been fascinated with presents. She requests the opening presents video on a daily basis, "Let's watch Mia open presents movie!" And if she runs across a napkin, kleenex, or any old rag she will wrap up some household object and proudly present it to whoever happens to be near. "Here you go! Open your present!" She's so excited to see your reaction that she can barely contain herself. As the recipient, it's your job to appear thoroughly honored to receive such gifts as spoons, hair bows, crayons, and maybe even some cheerios! You never know what you might get, but around here, every day is Christmas!

Ready for baby?

If you're asking me then it is yes and no. Physically, I was ready for this kid to be born yesterday. On the other hand, we haven't actually done a whole lot in terms of preparing the house, buying baby gear and clothes, etc... So in that sense, not really.

Mia, on the other hand, has got the big sister role down pat. She loves her new baby doll that she got for Christmas. She wants to feed it and rock it to sleep and carries it around the house in it's bassinette all day. She has a pack of travel kleenex that she carries with her as wipes and a few washcloths that she will use to change her diaper. She keeps the bottle in her kitchen sink between feedings.

Yesterday we visited a friend with a 2 month old infant and Mia was fascinated. She was quite gentle with her and wanted to kiss her and pat her and when she coughed a little Mia was very worried and asked, "Are you ok? Are you sick? Oh it's ok." She excitedly related her adventures to Daddy later that evening. When asked if she liked the baby, Mia replied, "That baby made a lot of noise!"
