Ancient history

February 28, 2008

I was organizing the Flickr photos today when I noticed there was not one photo for June and July of last year. Now granted, we were busy with the move, but I find it hard to believe I didn't take ONE picture in that time frame. I went back and looked and sure enough, there were hundreds of pictures from last summer that I had neglected to upload.

Some highlights include:

Our trip to Chicago

Visiting Grandma and GrappaGrappa in Kansas

Henry Doorley Zoo in Omaha

Robert's graduation from residency

Turner's birthday party

Jessica's birthday party

More from Mia's birthday & Disney

A glimpse into my day

February 26, 2008

Mia: Can I play with this _________? (Insert unacceptable object here.)

Me: No.

Mia: Can you say Yes?

Me: No, you can't play with that.

Mia: I may YES play with it!

Me: No, you may not play with it.

Mia: Don't talk to me!

My favorite things

February 25, 2008

I nursed Mia for a loooooong time. Well into the "Am I trying to nurse a monkey?" stage and beyond. It had been quite a while since I got to enjoy the peaceful, relaxed newborn ankle crossing and I had forgotten how much I loved the view.

Turns out, I'm getting my fill of this vantage point these days as we're in the thick of a 3 week growth spurt. I had been wondering where my sweet, calm baby had gone and had begun to wonder if she was taking a page from Big Sister's book. I'm crossing my fingers that this will only be a few days and then we'll be back to "normal".

Mia's First Haircut

February 24, 2008

You may have noticed Mia's new 'do over the past couple weeks. She had her first haircut on February 9th. She was pretty excited about the idea of going to get her new fancy big sister haircut, but once we got there she had some second thoughts. It was nothing that couldn't be overcome with a lollipop though! Once she got started I think she was enjoying her spa treatment. I have to say she looks pretty darn cute and so much older!

And she's off!

February 22, 2008

Ellerie got off to a slow start in the growth department. She immediately lost about a half a pound and in the 5 days after the birth had only gained back about 3 ounces. My milk had just come in though and she was nursing well so we decided to just watch her and she'd start gaining soon. Today she weighed in at 8lb 13oz so she's definitely not starving. I think we're officially ok on the weight gain!

My debut

February 18, 2008

Since the birth, I've had eager grandparents around daily to entertain Mia and Robert has taken some vacation time as well so it has seemed like such an easy transition from one child to two. Yesterday as we dropped Grandma & GrappaGrappa off at the airport, I realized that today was going to be my first day flying solo. How to balance a sweet but still pretty high maintenance two year old and a generally laid back, but still a two week old nonetheless.

Over the last few months we sort of adopted a routine where Robert will go get Mia in the morning and take her downstairs and feed her breakfast and they have a little Daddy-Daughter time before he has to go to work. When he leaves, she usually beelines it to my room to wake me up. Today was different though. Ellerie didn't wake up until 9am and when I looked at the clock I was first confused as to how I slept that long with no kids waking me. My thoughts quickly changed to panic as I wondered if Mia was still alive or if she injured herself badly enough to be unable to walk upstairs or scream for me... As I came downstairs, my questions were immediately answered. Candy wrappers were strewn everywhere, her mouth was covered in chocolate, and a mostly empty candy bag was at her side.

A quick background: The rule is that if Mia cleans her plate, she might be able to get some candy or dessert. If she chooses candy then she gets to pick a piece out of her special candy bag. She knows and loves this rule. If anyone else at the table finishes their dinner first then she announces it to everyone, "Grandma cleaned her plate and now she gets to have some candy!" I also know that she knows where the candy bag is kept, but she is very good about asking for it and knows that she only gets some with permission.

So, when I asked her what was going on this morning, she looked up at me with a completely serious face and explained that she had cleaned her breakfast plate so she could have some candy! I guess since no one was around to ask, she thought she would take it upon herself to enforce "the rule"!

Asserting her individuality

February 13, 2008

Ellerie has wasted no time setting herself apart from her sister. Mia was a really clean newborn as far as these things go. I never bothered to carry a spare set of clothes for her because I never needed them. She didn't spit up, and rarely had an explosive diaper while she was wearing cloth. As it turns out, Ellerie is exactly the opposite. It seems that every time I change her she pees on me and the new diaper as I am trying to get it on, usually resulting in a change of clothes for her, myself and a third diaper. But today she stepped it up a notch. As I'm changing her on my lap in the car, she starts peeing all over the place, I manage to catch most of it in the used diaper, but after she's done I try to switch it out for a new clean one as fast as possible... but not fast enough as she decided to start pooping all over the place between diapers! Now it's on me, on her clothes, on the new diaper, and the blanket. And do I have a spare set of clothes for her or me? Nope. I'm also practically out of diapers for the day although it's only 11 am. And did I mention that she tried to repeat this whole scene again a couple hours later? She's impossible to change! Ah well, this is the price I pay for having a baby who actually sleeps on occasion.
