My debut
February 18, 2008
Since the birth, I've had eager grandparents around daily to entertain Mia and Robert has taken some vacation time as well so it has seemed like such an easy transition from one child to two. Yesterday as we dropped Grandma & GrappaGrappa off at the airport, I realized that today was going to be my first day flying solo. How to balance a sweet but still pretty high maintenance two year old and a generally laid back, but still a two week old nonetheless.
Over the last few months we sort of adopted a routine where Robert will go get Mia in the morning and take her downstairs and feed her breakfast and they have a little Daddy-Daughter time before he has to go to work. When he leaves, she usually beelines it to my room to wake me up. Today was different though. Ellerie didn't wake up until 9am and when I looked at the clock I was first confused as to how I slept that long with no kids waking me. My thoughts quickly changed to panic as I wondered if Mia was still alive or if she injured herself badly enough to be unable to walk upstairs or scream for me... As I came downstairs, my questions were immediately answered. Candy wrappers were strewn everywhere, her mouth was covered in chocolate, and a mostly empty candy bag was at her side.
A quick background: The rule is that if Mia cleans her plate, she might be able to get some candy or dessert. If she chooses candy then she gets to pick a piece out of her special candy bag. She knows and loves this rule. If anyone else at the table finishes their dinner first then she announces it to everyone, "Grandma cleaned her plate and now she gets to have some candy!" I also know that she knows where the candy bag is kept, but she is very good about asking for it and knows that she only gets some with permission.
So, when I asked her what was going on this morning, she looked up at me with a completely serious face and explained that she had cleaned her breakfast plate so she could have some candy! I guess since no one was around to ask, she thought she would take it upon herself to enforce "the rule"!
