We CAN be taught

March 16, 2008

...by a 5 week old. Slowly but surely we're getting clued in. This week we learned that she loves her blanket and can't sleep without it. After watching her toss and turn for an hour trying to settle and stay asleep, I got the bright idea to go get her blanket. It was a warm night so I had thought she didn't need it. I don't think she did need it for the warmth, but maybe there's a security factor involved as well. I have been alternating between two heavier weight receiving blankets her whole life and she doesn't seem to have a preference between them. But more than once she has fallen asleep quickly as soon as she had her blanket!

The other lesson involves bath time. I mentioned before that Ellerie is NOT a fan of the bath. It seems to be so torturous for her that I avoid them until she starts smelling like rotting milk... Not a pretty sight. Finally, I got out the water sling and took her into the shower with me. The child DID NOT MAKE A PEEP! In fact, during a hair rinsing I could swear I detected a smile! It's a little cumbersome trying to get her dried off and wrapped up so that she doesn't start shivering AND into a diaper as quickly as possible while I'm also trying to keep a towel around myself. But the difference in her reaction makes it well worth the hassle. We may just be able to have a clean child AND our eardrums still intact.
