Oh wondrous feet

Ellerie

Ellerie has recently discovered hers and just can't get over how FUN they are. Who knew there were special toys built right onto the end of those legs? And with her new skills, she has trumped herself in the entertainment department. She used to flash one of her super sweet big smiles and everyone around her cooed and giggled back at her. Now she has added on a "grab your toes and pull" act right on top of that. People fall all over themselves trying to tell her how cute she is for that one. Who could resist?

Cocok's for Mia

May 23, 2008

To kick off Mia's 3rd birthday extravaganza, she got her first Cocok toes this week. She has been asking for this since my first Cocok's pedicure right after we arrived. I told her she could go for her birthday so she's been eagerly awaiting the day. Before I made the appointment, I told her she would have to sit super still while they did it and that she couldn't run off and play in the middle. She agreed and took it to heart. On the way there, days later, she very solemnly announced that she would sit very still in the big chair to get Cocok's toes and she would not play. I thought it was pretty cute that she was taking things so seriously, but I had my doubts that it would go smoothly. As it turns out, she did quite well. She was patient the whole time and sat there like a perfect young lady.

Not all is bliss in pedicure land though. Apparently she has inherited my OCD tendencies and insatiable urge to pick at things. Two toes are already missing their fish designs and I'm not sure if the rest of them are going to make it to her birthday party next weekend. At least it was fun GETTING the pedicure!

Off the charts

Ellerie

Today, Ellerie weighed in at 15 pounds 3 ounces. That's somewhere slightly above the 97th percentile line on the growth chart. Maybe this is why she started outgrowing her 3-6 month clothing at 2 months of age?

What's your favorite moon?

May 12, 2008

Mia seems to be enamored with the concept of favorite lately.

Mia: What's Daddy's favorite moon, Mommy?

Me: I don't know. What is Daddy's favorite moon?

Mia: The itty-bitty crescent moon. It looks like a banana.

Me: Oh that's a nice one. What is Mia's favorite moon?

Mia: My favorite moon is the BIIIIIIIG FUUUUUUL MOOOOOOON!

Me: Oh wow! Yeah I like that one too. What's my favorite moon?

Mia: We don't have a moon for you. They're all out!

What's your favorite food?

Mia: What's Daddy's favorite food, Mommy?

Me: Hmm, I don't know. What do you think?

Mia: Daddy's favorite food is shrimp!

Me: Yeah could be. He does like shrimp. What's your favorite food, Mia?

Mia: My favorite food is shrimp and doodles. (A.K.A. noodles if you were wondering.)

Me: Oh yummy. What's my favorite food?

Mia: Your favorite food is sushi!

Me: Yep, sushi IS good! What about Ellerie?

Mia: Ellerie's favorite food is nipples and fingers!

Spirited... you could say that

May 07, 2008

On Friday afternoon, I heard some semi-disturbing news from another parent that Mia might be causing some problems in class. Not the sort of thing I was happy to hear about. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather hear about it than not if there IS something to hear, but I just wish there was nothing to hear. But then again, with the language barrier, you never know what the real message is. Monday and Tuesday were both holidays and there was no school so today was the first chance I got to ask her teachers about the situation. A friend of mine generously offered to come translate for me so I could get a better picture than our sign language was giving me.

I opened the conversation with a general curiosity about how Mia was doing overall. As the question was translated, the teacher's body language said it all. Her head went back, she exhaled, she looked up at the ceiling, and she smiled a little as if she were amused, "Ah, Mia-chan..." I didn't really need much help translating her answer that was basically, "Now THAT'S a spirited child!" I can't say I was at all surprised by her response and I expect to hear a lot more of it in the years to come. It's funny that they've only been in school two weeks, but I guess it doesn't take long to get Mia's number!

The good news is that she doesn't find Mia's behavior at all troublesome. In fact, she thinks it's great that Mia seems to inspire the other kids to participate more in class. She starts dancing during singing time and some of the more shy kids come over and follow suit. She is not ALWAYS a good listener, and doesn't ALWAYS want to share the toy she is playing with, but she already seems to be getting better at it and that's what this year is for. To learn how to go to school, follow the routines, and play well with others. Most importantly, she loves going to school. So no need to worry, she's doing just fine.

The case of the expensive melon

May 05, 2008

One thing we've noticed since moving here is that fresh produce is hard to come by. Especially shopping at the commissary, sometimes the item you want simply isn't there. I haven't been able to buy baby carrots for about 3 months. On Saturday I wanted to make a salad for dinner but there was no lettuce. NO LETTUCE? Frustrating. The Japanese grocery stores might have a better selection, but then sometimes price is an issue. Especially when it isn't a locally grown item. I'm willing to pay a bit of a premium for a little taste of home... but a $25 cantaloupe is where I draw the line!
