Spirited... you could say that
May 07, 2008
On Friday afternoon, I heard some semi-disturbing news from another parent that Mia might be causing some problems in class. Not the sort of thing I was happy to hear about. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather hear about it than not if there IS something to hear, but I just wish there was nothing to hear. But then again, with the language barrier, you never know what the real message is. Monday and Tuesday were both holidays and there was no school so today was the first chance I got to ask her teachers about the situation. A friend of mine generously offered to come translate for me so I could get a better picture than our sign language was giving me.
I opened the conversation with a general curiosity about how Mia was doing overall. As the question was translated, the teacher's body language said it all. Her head went back, she exhaled, she looked up at the ceiling, and she smiled a little as if she were amused, "Ah, Mia-chan..." I didn't really need much help translating her answer that was basically, "Now THAT'S a spirited child!" I can't say I was at all surprised by her response and I expect to hear a lot more of it in the years to come. It's funny that they've only been in school two weeks, but I guess it doesn't take long to get Mia's number!
The good news is that she doesn't find Mia's behavior at all troublesome. In fact, she thinks it's great that Mia seems to inspire the other kids to participate more in class. She starts dancing during singing time and some of the more shy kids come over and follow suit. She is not ALWAYS a good listener, and doesn't ALWAYS want to share the toy she is playing with, but she already seems to be getting better at it and that's what this year is for. To learn how to go to school, follow the routines, and play well with others. Most importantly, she loves going to school. So no need to worry, she's doing just fine.
